Topsoil-stripping before quarry activity at Gortineddan townland, Co. Fermanagh, was monitored. The proximity of a probable enclosure/ cashel, coupled with the position of the development area in the greater landscape, raised the probability of encountering archaeological finds/features.

The topsoil was stripped initially by a loading shovel and, after a mechanical breakdown, by tracked excavator. Topsoil averaged 0.3m thick and lay over mixed gravel/clay subsoil. The monitored topsoil-stripping did not reveal any finds or features of archaeological significance.
