A fulacht fiadh with associated burnt-mound material was identified during the monitoring of trial-pits, topsoil-stripping and drainage trenches carried out on the second contract of the Airport–Balbriggan Bypass. The fulacht fiadh consisted of two adjacent troughs and a single hearth. Both troughs and the hearth were filled with heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. A natural slump of subsoil into the first trough indicated a period of non-use of the feature. The base of the hearth contained intensely burnt subsoil.
Editor’s note: Though carried out in 2001, this excavation was not reported on in time for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
