Testing was undertaken in Skidoo in compliance with planning conditions. The proposed development includes the construction of a golf-cultural heritage report (dated 12 December 2000) identified a circular anomaly on an aerial photograph that was investigated. Two perpendicular trenches excavated at the location of the circular anomaly uncovered three features of archaeological potential: two linear ‘ditch’ features aligned north–south and a small, subcircular pit. The fills of one of the ditches contained animal bone. A buffer area was established around the features, and all material was left in situ.
The licence was extended to accommodate the monitoring of groundworks for the golf-course development in the townland of Skidoo. Monitoring identified three archaeological features: a linear feature associated with Bronze Age pottery (see No. 680, Excavations 2002, 02E0603), part of a shallow, flat-bottomed ditch (see No. 681, Excavations 2002, 02E0604) and an isolated circular hearth. This hearth comprised a subcircular cut measuring 1m north–south by 1.2m and containing a charcoal-rich fill with bone, ash and a wooden stake point.
Monitoring of the remaining areas of the golf-course at Roganstown was conducted under separate licence (No. 668, Excavations 2002, 02E0408)
