Pre-development testing was undertaken over two days in February 2002. Subsequently two additional trenches were dug as part of an extension of the original licence. Additional to this work, the removal of felled vegetation and debris surrounding standing buildings and within part of the lower millpond was monitored. This work was undertaken to facilitate the survey of the industrial archaeology of the site.
There was no evidence of any features or finds of archaeological importance in the trenches excavated in the fields.
Two trenches excavated through the L-shaped bank recorded the profile of the ditches and bank. No dating evidence was recorded in these trenches. Consequently, the bank may be either the defensive enclosure of Saggart dating to c. 1471/2 or an 18th-/19th-century field fence. There was no evidence to support the suggestion that the bank represents the historical enclosure of Saggart; however, as the bank is lined with trees that are listed for preservation, it is not likely to be subject to serious modification under the present proposal for housing.
The monitoring undertaken in February 2002 revealed the extent of the eastern element of the lower millpond. This was the subject of an industrial archaeology survey by Dr F. Hammond.
