The site was identified during monitoring of groundworks (No. 668, Excavations 2002, 02E0408). It was initially interpreted as two separate pit features; however, excavation revealed these pits to be the uppermost fills of a wide ditch. This ditch was aligned north–south, which seems to indicate that it may have connected a stream (c. 20m to the north of and downhill from the exposed part of the feature) with the probable location of buildings depicted on Rocque’s map (as identified in the cartographic assessment in an earlier cultural heritage report). The probable location of these structures was assessed by previous test excavation (No. 662, Excavations 2002, 02E0335), which failed to identify any structural evidence.
