Testing was undertaken in Roganstown in north County Dublin. The proposed development includes the construction of a golf-course and a hotel. A cultural heritage report (dated 12 December 2000) identified two circular anomalies on an aerial photograph.
A single trench, 100m long, was excavated using a machine with a toothless bucket across the location of the two anomalies. This trench revealed no features of archaeological potential. The anomalies identified on the aerial photograph correlate to areas where the composition of the natural subsoil varies. In these areas the subsoil becomes less sandy and more clayey. This easily explains the darker anomalies on the aerial photograph as areas with a higher propensity to retain water.
