An assessment took place of a proposed development site fronting onto Main Street, Rathcoole, Co. Dublin. The site was considered significant as it lies within the medieval town of Rathcoole, which is defined as a zone of archaeological potential, and it is bounded by the site of the medieval borough. Very little archaeological excavation had taken place in or around the town to date.
Three trenches were excavated by a mechanical digger fitted with a 1.5m toothless ditching bucket, to the depth of undisturbed subsoil. Nothing of archaeological interest was found.
Two fragments of post-medieval pottery were found in a disturbed context. One appears to be a fragment of pearlware (19th century) from a plate. The second sherd comes from the body of a large storage vessel and appears to date from a similar period to the pearlware.
