The original testing programme for this site (Excavations 2001, No. 448) had identified archaeological remains dating to the early medieval period. It was recommended that a ‘buffer zone of appropriate dimensions be established in order to preserve the archaeological remains in situ’. In order to establish the extent of archaeological remains relative to the outlined zone of archaeological potential (SMR 8:10), a testing programme was undertaken from 20 to 22 February 2002. Eight trenches were opened by machine. Two concentrations of archaeological activity were identified, localised within Trenches 1, 5 and 6. In Trench 1 fourteen features were revealed and interpreted as relating directly to those archaeological remains identified during the earlier testing programme (December 2001). They consisted of north–south linear ditches and gullies, charcoal-rich deposits and a stake-hole. A single feature was identified at the intersection of Trenches 5 and 6. This was a narrow (0.3m in average width) curvilinear feature filled with charcoal-rich, clayey silt, 0.06–0.15m deep. No artefacts were recovered from these features. No remains or material of archaeological significance were identified in the remaining trenches.
