Monitoring of geotechnical boreholes and test-pits was required at the proposed development of the Digital Hub Site, James’s Street and Thomas Street, as it lies within a zone of archaeological potential. Sixteen boreholes and eight test-pits were excavated from 26 February to 8 March 2002.
The boreholes and the test-pits produced evidence of building rubble on average 2.5–3m deep. Throughout the two sites this material remained consistent, with dark brown silty clay, red brick and mortar underlying it. Only to the north of the site, at Borehole 2, did this vary significantly, with a deeper deposit displaying evidence of dumping (domestic kitchen debris). The depth of the deposit and the presence of red brick throughout the site indicate that there may have been significant use of basements in the area.
Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded; however, because of the limited nature of the material recovered through the shell-and-augur method, it is difficult to discount any of the areas as archaeologically void.
