Monitoring took place, of a lift-shaft excavation near the site of St Mary’s Abbey, at 3–4 Meeting House Lane, Dublin 7, from 27 February to 1 March 2002. A trench measuring 2.6m by 2.3m was manually excavated to an average depth of 1.5m, abutting the interior, north-facing wall of the existing building, which is adjacent to the chapterhouse of St Mary’s Abbey to the south. The material excavated consisted of densely packed rubble brought in as landfill before a later phase of development of the site. Two fragments of decorated stone were retrieved from one of the rubble layers: one segment of a decorative pillar with a trefoil shape in cross-section and one fragment of a vault rib, similar to details in the chapterhouse of the abbey. There was no indication of undisturbed archaeological deposits in the trench.
