Monitoring of geotechnical site investigations took place during the continuing redevelopment of Heuston Station, Dublin 8, within an area of archaeological potential. Previous construction and redevelopment work had revealed substantial deposits of internationally important archaeological material under the station and trackworks.
The excavation of twelve boreholes around Platform 5 failed to produce any material of archaeological significance. The small quantity and low quality of excavated material from the boreholes and the presence of soil contamination meant that analysis of the subsurface deposits was difficult. Consequently the results of the borehole excavations could not be used as a firm indication of the underlying stratigraphy in this area.
