Testing was undertaken at the site of a proposed underground fuel-tank farm and plant room at Heuston Station, Dublin 8. The site of the proposed fuel-tank farm is on top of a known 19th-century embankment. Testing was undertaken in response to an environmental report that identified the area of the proposed development as the approximate location of Viking burials.
It was clear from the results of the testing that the embankment survived to a depth of c. 3.5–4m. This consisted of dump layers of gravels and clays, with large quantities of occupational and industrial material of 19th-century date and later. However, it was difficult to gain access to the lower levels of the trenches for archaeological remains because of their depth.
