The site lies outside the medieval walled town on high ground overlooking the ‘black pool’, or dubh linn, of Dublin, to the north. The writer carried out two previous assessments (Excavations 2000, No. 284, and Excavations 2001, No. 381), which revealed deposits of medieval soils sealed by post-medieval domestic habitation. A third assessment was carried out within existing buildings that were previously unavailable. This established that No. 53 Great George’s Street South sits directly on boulder clay, as does part of the Tyre Factory (a protected structure, Nos 60–67 Stephen Street Lower).
