During the construction of the new George’s Lane, which was laid directly adjacent to the existing George’s Lane, an 18th-century well was revealed. The well was built of regularly shaped blackstones, with seven/ eight courses visible above the waterline, which were 1.12m deep. The well measured 1m in diameter, with the surface stones averaging 0.4m by 0.6m.
A large upright timber section (0.9m by 0.4m visible), which had formed part of the water-drawing mechanism, was found in the well, lying against the side wall. A second, broken timber piece stood upright in the well, apparently in situ. A tape was dropped into the well and recorded a depth of 13m, but this may not represent the true depth owing to likely infill build-up.
Two pieces of timber had lain next to the well and formed part of the water-drawing mechanism.
The remaining road trench was 1.8m deep at its north end and was composed of introduced gravels over natural, yellow clay.
