This group of buildings is on the eastern side of D’Olier Street, Dublin, in an area that was reclaimed from the River Liffey only in the 17th century. However, this section of the Liffey was the main route into Dublin throughout the Viking period, leading to the landing point known as the Stein, close to the modern Pearse Street Garda station. The Bord Gáis building (24a D’Olier Street), an art deco building, is a protected structure.
The assessment consisted of five test-pits in an area of a proposed new basement. These established the presence of an original infilled basement relating to the present 19th-century building, which was cut directly into river gravels and silt. Although the upper levels were contaminated in the 19th century, these deposits presumably represent original 17th-century riverine deposits, which were disturbed during the building programme.
