The site is bounded to the south by Digges Street Upper, to the north by the Grafton Hall development, to the east by the Dublin City Council Mercer Scheme and Aungier Lane, and to the west by the rear of properties facing Aungier Street, covering an area of c. 0.7ha.
Five trenches were opened across the footprint of the site. The overall stratigraphy was generally uniform. Evidence of demolished red-brick basements was revealed aligned east–west, along the Digges Street frontage, and extending back for 12–14m north–south. In Trench 1 the remains of a red-brick arch/vault were revealed, which appeared to form part of the basement structures; it was partially filled with clay and rubble.
From the back end of the basement remains, the stratigraphy was generally free of any inclusions and appeared to have formed the garden plots of the 19th-century houses that fronted onto Digges Street Lower.
There was no evidence of any significant archaeological deposits in the trenches opened. The red-brick arch/vault in Trench 1 may extend east–west, and it is suggested that monitoring and recording of the arch remains along the Digges Street frontage be carried out. There were no finds.
