Monitoring of the excavation of guide holes along the south wall of Nos 5, 7 and 7b Blackhall Place, Dublin, took place to facilitate the insertion of piles close to the lines of the flanking buildings. All structures on the site had been demolished, and the surface was reduced to approximate street level. The guide holes were 0.1m long, 0.5m wide and 0.5m deep.
It was clear that disturbed made ground formed the layer excavated. A gritty, brick- and mortar-rich matrix was present, containing white tin-glazed earthenware, later blackware and some butchered animal bone.
In addition, iron slag and bloom were evident from the extracted material. Records from the 19th century show the site of Nos 5–7 Blackhall Place as occupied by the firm of Paul and Vincent, farm-implement manufacturers and iron founders, and this is probably the origin of this metalworking debris.
