Intertidal survey and underwater assessment of five sites affected by the Youghal Bypass Scheme and Bridge Construction were carried out. Sites identified for study included a fish weir, a stone-built quay (English Quay), a sea wall, a timber quay (Brickworks Quay) and a further possible timber quay/sluice structure. Most of these sites are believed to be associated with the establishment of Youghal Brickworks in the mid-19th century.
Detailed plans and written records of all sites were made. Magnetometry was also employed to assess the archaeological potential of the riverbed surrounding English Quay.
A complex system of natural and artificial erosion processes was visible at work on the sites. The most immediate impact was at English Quay, manifest in large-scale collapse of the north-west corner of the structure. It is anticipated that much of the observed erosion will be alleviated on conclusion of the civil works project.
