Test-trenches were excavated at the site of a proposed dwelling-house. The site forms the eastern half of a triangular field containing the ‘site of’ a castle (SMR 51:22). The cross on the map that marks the castle ‘site’ is outside the development site, on higher ground in the western part of the field. The castle, of which there is now no visible surface trace, is believed to have been built by the MacCarthys.
Seven trenches were excavated to a maximum depth of 0.8m. Stratigraphy, which was similar throughout, consisted of 0.1m of topsod over dark brown featureless topsoil. Stony subsoil, generally mid- to light brown and in places pinkish- and orange/brown, was encountered at 0.5m. The subsoil contained large amounts of naturally occurring red sandstone. All of the trenches investigated were archaeologically featureless.
