Testing took place at this urban site, where development will consist of four apartment blocks. The site is on the waterfront to the south of the walled town of Kinsale, on land that was reclaimed in the late 19th/early 20th century. A factory stood on the site until spring 2002. Seven trenches were excavated, and it was established that, beneath modern paving, stratigraphy consisted of modern fill 1.5–2m thick. Layers of stony, gravelly clay containing some animal bone and modern pottery were present to either seawater or bedrock levels at the site. This material was probably introduced to create new land between earlier quays, which projected at right angles from the north–south shoreline. A masonry wall in the western part of the site may indicate the former waterfront to the west of O’Connell Street.
