Test-trenches were excavated at the site of a proposed dwelling-house. The site is 20m to the east of the eastern circuit of the possible early ecclesiastical enclosure of Gortnagross/ Kilcranathan/Kilgobban (SMR 32:55). The enclosure is visible on the 1844 first and 1905 second editions of the OS 6-inch map. There is no trace of the enclosing bank in the south-east quadrant.
The western part of the field in which the site lies, which would be inside the possible enclosure, is low lying and very marshy. The house will be built on higher ground c. 100m east of the possible enclosure. Six trenches were excavated; stratigraphy was similar throughout and consisted of 0.15m of topsod over 0.35m of mid-brown topsoil. Stony red/brown subsoil with patches of light grey clay was encountered at 0.5m. All of the trenches investigated were archaeologically featureless.
