Cork County Council requested testing as part of a request for further information for a planning application associated with the extension of sand-and-gravel quarrying at Glenbeg, Dungourney, Co. Cork. The quarry lies within the zone of archaeological potential of a ringfort. The County Council also requested that a 20m buffer zone be established around the ringfort.
Three trenches were excavated outside the buffer zone boundary, to the west, south and east of the ringfort. The area to the north of the ringfort had been quarried in the recent past. Two features were exposed in Trench 3 to the east. F1, a backfilled trench, lay close to the location of the original field boundary and may represent the surface remains of this boundary. F2, a small area of burning to the south of F1, may represent burning associated with the removal of hedge growth along the boundary. The developer was advised and agreed that no quarrying would take place in this area (i.e. to the east of the ringfort). No finds or features of an archaeological nature were noted in the other two trenches.
