Monitoring of groundworks for a new dwelling on the north side of Kift’s Lane took place in May 2002. The site is small, measuring 6.15m east–west by 5.9m. It lies just inside the assumed line of the town wall. It is well documented historically, with deeds going back to 1726. The size of the site and the nature of the building being constructed meant that only the upper 0.8m of material was removed. Historically, two ruined houses were on the site in 1768 and later an open yard. A house was built on the site in c. 1833, and the remains of its foundation were found. A stone-lined well was uncovered midway along the southern lane frontage. This is recorded in a deed of 1833 as forming a back-up water supply for a nearby malt-house. The well had been backfilled in the 1960s. The upper 0.4m of this feature was removed. The earliest deposits uncovered were of 18th-century date.
