Testing took place before conservation and repair work to Carriganass Castle, a tower-house situated on a rock outcrop on the northern bank of the Ouvane River. Trenches 1 and 2 were opened by hand in the area of the south-west and north-west return of the western wall of the castle. They were excavated to locate a solid platform or the foundations of the wall in order that the stonemasons could stabilise the corners of the west wall. The cornerstones of the west wall had been robbed out almost to parapet level. No archaeological stratigraphy or artefacts were recorded or recovered in any of the trenches. The western wall of the castle is built directly on bedrock.
