Pre-development monitoring was carried out at Ballyhemiken, Carrigaline, Co. Cork, as part of a planning application for the construction of a dwelling-house. There was no surface indication of any monuments in the area scheduled for development, but the former existence of a standing stone (SMR 87:113) in the field led the planning authority to request that a full archaeological assessment be made of the proposed site.
The topsoil was removed from the entire area of the proposed house, the entranceway and the driveway. It overlay the natural subsoil, an orange/brown boulder clay. No archaeological features or finds were noted on the exposed surface. Trenching in the percolation area and the driveway revealed an undisturbed soil profile similar to that observed in the area of the house.
