This site was examined as part of the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West project. A small burnt mound measuring 3.6m (north–south) by 2.7m with a maximum thickness of 0.2m was excavated. The mound lay on boggy ground, and a small stream was observed nearby.
A pit or trough stratigraphically pre-dated the mound. This feature was sub-oval, with steeply sloping sides and a shallow, flat base, and measured 1.85m (east–west) by 1.3m by 0.45m deep. The pit was filled by three deposits. The primary fill, 0.12m thick, was a dark grey, clayey silt of hard compaction with a high proportion of small, angular stones (possibly burnt) and a substantial amount of charcoal fragments. The topographical location suggested that the base of the pit was probably waterlogged for the main part of the year. The secondary fill, 0.1m thick, was a medium grey, clayey silt of moderate compaction and moist consistency and contained a high amount of large angular stones (0.03–0.1m). The tertiary fill, 0.45m thick, was a brown/grey clayey silt of moderate compaction and dry consistency and contained a few small, angular stones.
No artefacts were recovered during excavation, but samples were taken for charcoal recovery for radiocarbon determination and species identification.
