During the manual digging of a pit for a gatepost at Killanena, Sixmilebridge, the remains of a human skeleton were uncovered. The supine extended remains of a single adult female lay in a west–east direction (head to the west). The remains were recovered at a depth of c. 1m below the base of a drystone wall. A layer of large stones was uncovered overlying and apparently concentrated over the area of the burial. The grave consisted of a simple oblong cut. The skull, upper thorax and upper arms, including the surrounding grave-cut, were truncated by the digging of the gatepost. The general area to the east of the skeleton had been significantly dug away to provide access to a field, and the area to the west consisted of a garden. In this area of the garden it was possible to trace the remains of a mound, in which the burial was apparently centred. This mound extended c. 7m out from the burial.
The skeletal remains are currently being analysed. It is proposed that part of the skeleton will be dated.
