This site was examined as part of Bord Gáis Éireann’s Pipeline to the West. A single oval pit, measuring 1.7m (north-east/south-west) by 0.7m, was excavated. The sides of the feature came down to a sloping base, and it had a maximum depth of 0.19m. The south-east side was more deeply cut than the north-west. The fill was a mid-brown silty clay. Considerable charcoal and fire-reddened oxidised clay was noted in the fill. Oxidising was also seen on the adjacent natural geological deposits.
The excavated feature represents a fire-pit. Samples of charcoal from the pit may prove suitable for tree species identification and could allow a radiocarbon dating determination to be made.
