This site was examined as part of Bord Gáis Éireann’s Pipeline to the West. A deposit of burnt soil and timbers was recorded during monitoring. Subsequent excavation showed that the timbers were modern machined fence posts and that plastic ‘builder’s twine’ was embedded in the burnt soil. Further, pine needles were found in the burnt material. A commercial pine forest stood within 25m of the excavated area, and it seems plausible to interpret the deposits as the result of a bonfire of cleared undergrowth and branches, perhaps from the previous year (i.e. 2001).
