The site was discovered, on flat ground, during topsoil-stripping on 28 February 2002 along Phase 3 of the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West (see No. 64, Excavations 2002, 02E0119). It was excavated by hand on 1 March 2002 and consisted of a single pit, 1.1m long, 0.39m wide and 0.15m deep. The fill was loose, dark grey/brown, silty clay, containing several small pieces of iron slag. No other archaeological features or contexts were present in the vicinity of the pit.
