Monitoring was carried out before construction of the proposed N18/N19 Ballycasey–Dromoland Road Scheme from May to September 2001. As part of this project Clare County Council proposed to light the turret near Dromoland Castle and to reinstate the crescentic mound on which it stands. Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out in September 2002 under an extension to the existing licence. The works involved the stripping of a wayleave 3m wide to accommodate ESB ducts and the stripping of the top of the denuded mound before reinstating it to its former crescentic plan. In the area of the wayleave the stony boulder clay was exposed directly beneath the sod and topsoil. The sod was removed from the mound, and the underlying material consisted of rubble-filled brown clay loam. No further material was removed from the mound, and topsoil was introduced to the site to reconstruct the mound to its original height. No features or finds of an archaeological nature were identified during the monitoring works at this site.
