This site was examined as part of Bord Gáis Éireann’s Pipeline to the West. A single and seemingly isolated cremation pit was excavated. It was broadly circular and had a diameter of 0.42m. The pit was concave in profile and was 0.22m deep. The fill was a fine silt. The upper part of the fill was mid-brown with occasional charcoal flecks and no cremated bone. The lower part was almost pure charcoal with occasional cremated bone. The very base of the pit had a high concentration of cremated bone.
A 100% sample of the pit fill was taken to be sieved in order to maximise recovery of bone and charcoal for radiocarbon dating and timber species identification.
The funerary pit is at present undated but will probably prove to be prehistoric.
