A test excavation was conducted on 10 June 2002 before a commercial housing development. It was anticipated that six test-trenches would be mechanically excavated with a grading bucket on the 220m2 site. However, extant structural remains precluded the excavation of three of the trenches. The licence was transferred to Mary Henry for the remainder of the outstanding work (see No. 47, Excavations 2002). The three excavated trenches varied from 0.15m to 3.5m deep. The fill varied from shallow garden soil to dumped river-dredged deposits to 2m of rubble fill. The structural remains of two, possibly three, houses fronting onto Church Street were revealed, consisting of red-brick walls that were post-medieval in date. Continual collapse of the trench wall precluded access for detailed recording.
