Test excavation was carried out before construction at Church Street, Leighlinbridge, in July 2002. The proposed development site is on the western side of the village, adjacent to the River Barrow. Four trenches were excavated to an average depth of 1.35m below present ground level. The stratigraphy encountered consisted of topsoil above a mix of rubble, red brick, clay and stones that overlay clay subsoil. No archaeological features or deposits were noted.
