Testing and subsequent monitoring were undertaken at a proposed apartment development at Centaur Street, Carlow. The development involved the retention of a number of stone ‘bonded’ warehouses and the construction of 30 apartments on a site of 0.17ha close to the centre of the town. Foundation work comprised the insertion of 69 concrete piles and the construction of a sewage pipeline across the site.

Testing was carried out on 10 June 2002. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted. Compact layers of gravel and rubble were consistent throughout the site, and both had an average thickness of c. 0.5–0.6m.

Monitoring was carried out after the completion of testing. Monitoring of piling took place from 21 to 26 September 2002. Generally throughout the site there was a build-up of made ground or rubble that overlay natural sands. There were, however, in places deeper deposits of rubble or thick layers of poured concrete. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
