Planning permission was granted for a housing development close to the site of a rath (SMR 26:11). A planning constraint was imposed necessitating an archaeological evaluation of the site before development could proceed. Test-trenches with a combined length of c. 400m were excavated using a mechanical excavator with a 1.8m-wide toothless bucket. The turf and topsoil varied in depth; they were c. 0.5m deep to the north and east of the field but shallower to the south and west. In the central part of the field the topsoil had previously been stripped and an area of hard-standing had been created. Although trenching revealed numerous ditch-like features, all of these proved to be field drains, with the exception of a probable field boundary running from west to east across the central part of the site.
