The excavation involved a small-scale investigation at the junction of the post-medieval town wall with its mid-west bastion. The work was undertaken to determine the depth and condition of this section of the wall below current ground level before the start of conservation work. A single, small, L-shaped trench (1.79m east–west by 2.36m) was opened around the surviving outer corner of the bastion on the inside face of the town wall. Excavation of a sequence of superficial and modern deposits revealed the surviving extent of the town wall at this corner. The wall at this point reached a depth of c. 1.09m below the current ground surface, and it was shown that the wall was constructed on redeposited subsoil. The only cornerstone to remain in place was that of the lowest course, the rest presumably having been robbed out over the last few centuries.
