Monitoring of all construction work on the Rathnew to Arklow Feeder Mains Pipeline was required for the parts of the route considered archaeologically sensitive. These included:
(a) all pipe-laying within the urban area of Wicklow town (00E0826);
(b) all pipe-laying within the zone of archaeological potential for Arklow town (00E0891);
(c) the section that encroaches on SMR 36:5 in the townland of Ballyvaltron;
(d) the section that encroaches on SMR 36:16 in the townland of Ballinaclea.
The Arklow and Wicklow town centres were not opened for pipe-laying during the course of these contracts and this work has yet to commence. All trenches affecting archaeologically sensitive areas were monitored and revealed no features of archaeological significance. The majority of these trenches revealed deposits which had already been disturbed during periods of roadworks and drainage schemes. Work on this project will continue into the urban areas of Wicklow and Arklow. In advance of this work it will be necessary to re-evaluate this project in respect of the urban zones of potential. Further monitoring will be required.
