Test excavation was undertaken on part of a proposed hotel development site at ‘the Killing Hollow’, Powerscourt Demesne, Co. Wicklow, on 7 and 8 August 2001. The site (300m north-west/south-east by 180m) lies c. 350m east of Powerscourt House, which is classified as a ‘castle site’ in the Recorded Monuments of County Wicklow (OPW, 1996). There is a pronounced fall in the land towards the valley of the River Dargle to the south-east. The site has been subjected to extensive quarrying since the 1940s, and disused sand and gravel pits account for approximately 50% of the total area. Much of the remainder of the site is heavily overgrown with woodland and scrub vegetation. A planted area at the south-east was the only part of the site accessible for testing purposes.
Five trenches, varying from 20m to 60m in length, were excavated in this area. The only feature discovered was a stone-filled land drain, which is probably contemporary with the planting of this area. No archaeological material was discovered during testing.
