An excavation of a small burnt area was carried out in advance of the N11 road-widening scheme at chainage 2330. The road scheme consists of the construction of 6km of dual two-lane carriageway along the existing line of the N11 road from the northern end of Kilmacanogue village to the southern end of the Glen of the Downs.
The burnt area extended east–west and measured 2.5m by 1.15m. It consisted of two layers, a sticky light brown clay over a burnt deposit 0.07–0.1m deep, and a layer composed of sandy gritty clay with organic roots and small stones and some minute charcoal specks. The burnt layer covered a slight oval depression with burnt twig remains approximately 0.07m deep; it did not contain any finds. There were no other features associated with the burnt area. It lay directly underneath the stripped topsoil.
