A test excavation was carried out here on 23 October. The work was undertaken as part of advance archaeological works for the N11 Newtownmountkennedy to Ballynabarny Dual Carriageway Scheme. The site was on the southern terraces of a small river valley. Six trenches were machine-excavated to a maximum depth of 0.35m, to the surface of the underlying subsoil.
Before the excavation commenced, two sites were noted. The first, Site A, was 16m to the east of the CPO boundary at 32796 20400 (59m OD). It consisted of a roughly circular area with a domed profile. It rose to a height of 0.4m at the south, 0.5m at the north and 0.2m at the east and west. It had a diameter of 14m, and its profile was most discernible from the north. There was no visible trace of an enclosing ditch or other form of boundary. This description would identify it as a possible prehistoric burial site. Its low aspect suggests a possible Bronze Age burial. However, the mound’s siting on the second terrace of a river valley could identify it as a Linkardstown Cist Burial.
Three other anomalies were revealed that comprised small areas of charcoal-rich and burnt soil consistent with prehistoric activity. Their locations were recorded before further investigation.
