A test excavation was carried out at Ballynabarny between 16 and 18 October as part of advance archaeological works for the N11 Newtownmountkennedy to Ballynabarny dual carriageway scheme.
The site consisted of open pasture on a hillside overlooking Rathnew. A total of test-trenches were machine-excavated to a maximum depth of 0.35m, to the surface of the underlying subsoil. Seventeen anomalies were revealed that comprised small locations of charcoal-rich and burnt soil consistent with prehistoric activity. Their locations were recorded in advance of further investigation.
