Testing was carried out at Ballynabarny between 8 and 12 October 2001 as part of advance archaeological works for the N11 Newtownmountkennedy to Ballynabarny dual carriageway scheme. Five fields were tested within the southern part of the land-take in this townland. Within Field 1 (to the south of the junction between the existing N11 and the Wicklow road) only two stray finds of natural flint were uncovered. Field 2, to the south, contained two possible ditches and four features comprising possible pits and post-holes. This field was excavated under licence number 01E0904, during 2002, where it is referred to as Area 3. In Field 3, north-west of Field 1, twenty features (or groups of features) were identified. These consisted of a number of anomalous features, possible pits, post-holes and one possible ditch. Field 4, to the north-east, contained the remains of a fulacht fiadh and eighteen features (or groups of features). These consisted of a number of anomalous features, possible pits and post-holes and three ditches. The northern part of this field was excavated under licence number 01E0904, in 2002, in which two distinct concentrations of material are referred to as Areas 1 and 2. Within Field 5, to the east of Field 4, six major features were uncovered, all of which appear to be related to fulachta fiadh or burnt spreads.
