The proposed site of a single house development lies within the zone of archaeological potential but outside the known area of the walled medieval town of Wexford. An archaeological assessment, including testing, was required by the Planning Authority prior to the start of any work on the site. Test excavation was undertaken in July 2001.
The material uncovered in the yard at 69 Upper John Street appears to be a garden-type soil laid down between the 18th century and the present. A pit cut into the south end of Trench 1 contained the mainly articulated remains of an adult pony. This appears to have been deposited into the pit in the 18th century at the time when the yard was being used as a cattle market.
No other material of archaeological significance was uncovered in the areas tested.
