The site of a proposed extension to the rear of an existing premises at 26 South Street, New Ross, lies within the medieval walled town. A test excavation, as part of an archaeological impact assessment of the site, was required by the planning authority. This was undertaken in June 2001.
Prior to excavation the site was part of a carpark to the rear of the old convent building fronting the east side of South Street. Originally the site sloped down from east to west and seems to have been levelled with removal of material from the eastern part of the site. Four test-trenches were excavated. These revealed undisturbed subsoil/bedrock directly under the carpark surface under most of the eastern part of the site, while a layer of modern building debris covered the subsoil at the western end of the site.
No features of archaeological significance were uncovered.
