Testing was undertaken in April 2001 to provide information on the possible archaeological content of the proposed development site, in accordance with conditions of the planning permission.
The site is divided into three terraces; the lowest was formerly the site of a riverfront warehouse, the central terrace gives access from the junction of Craywell Road/North Street, and the upper terrace lies below Craywell Road.
The testing revealed an absence of medieval and post-medieval evidence from the site, suggesting that the area remained completely undeveloped until the late 18th or early 19th century. It is likely that the buildings shown on the 1843 OS map were the first to be developed on the site. More recently a variety of concrete, steel and asbestos-clad buildings were constructed.
