The site lies within the medieval walled town of New Ross, on a street parallel to the quay. The testing was carried out in advance of building a new centre for the ‘Meals On Wheels’ in the town. Prior to the work a modern workshop was demolished. The results of the trenching were consistent throughout the site, i.e. garden soil with modern inclusions such as broken concrete, brick, and glazed white ware. A single sherd of black ware was the earliest datable find retrieved. The soil was 0.9–1.2m deep and overlay weathered shale bedrock.
