It was proposed to build six houses on a greenfield site containing a standing stone. A detailed archaeological assessment and report involving testing was requested. It is proposed to construct houses to the north-west and north-east of a central roundabout or park on which the standing stone can be retained in an undisturbed context.
The field, in which the standing stone is located roughly in the centre, is characterised by poorly drained swampy soil over hard grey clay containing shale. The drainage of the upper layers reflected the underlying strata. The field was obviously systematically drained in the modern period, probably in the 19th or early 20th century, at which time it is possible that the stone was also erected. The stone is not shown on the first edition OS map. There were no features or artefacts of potential archaeological significance apparent in the excavated trenches.
