Test excavation was undertaken on the site of a proposed residential development at Rathconrath, Co. Westmeath, on 7 June 2001. The development site is 100m west of Rathtrim Motte. Three 50–100m-long trenches were excavated on the footprint of the proposed development. Trench 1 followed the route of the proposed service road, Trench 2 followed the building line of the proposed new houses, and Trench 3 was located on the site of the proposed green area. Testing revealed evidence of extensive ground disturbance in the southern and western parts of the site. This was clearly associated with the demolition of buildings indicated on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map. No archaeological material was discovered during testing.
