Monitoring was conducted of the first phase of topsoil-stripping in advance of the construction of a technological park at Marlinstown, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. The sod- and topsoil-stripping extended to an average depth of 0.2m and overlay the orange clay/sandy subsoil. A mound of redeposited topsoil was present above this deposit, possibly originating from the construction of the nearby road. Although all the topsoil-stripping and subsurface works for the site have not been completed, those carried out so far did not reveal any archaeological stratigraphy. No further work is required within this area of the site, but monitoring of the remaining ground reduction works which are due to recommence in early 2002 will be required.
